CLIMB and Teen CLIMB®

Children’s Lives Include Moments of Bravery (CLIMB®) is a program developed by The Children’s Treehouse Foundation, a non-profit foundation that seeks to provide emotional support for children whose parents have cancer. FVHO facilitators have been specially trained to guide our patients’ families through this program, which is open to children between the ages of 5-12 years.

FVHO’s CLIMB program consists of 90-minute group meetings held weekly for four weeks, with new cohorts offered several times a year. During these meetings, facilitators use conversation and art to help children identify and express complex feelings appropriately in a safe, nurturing environment. Children track their progress in a provided workbook that they can share with their families.

Topics in CLIMB will include:

  • Knowledge of cancer and treatments
  • Identifying feelings (happy, confused, sad, scared, mad)
  • Coping with feelings
  • Facilitating communication

The bonds that children develop with other children going through similar experiences through this program are invaluable. By helping to normalize the feelings of anger, fear and sadness and build the ability to healthfully express feelings and emotions, CLIMB participants are equipped with the support, tools and understanding needed to become more comfortable with their parents cancer diagnosis.

Teen CLIMB® offers the same support model as CLIMB, but with a focus on the needs of adolescents and teens ages 13-18. There is also an educational group offered for the parents of CLIMB or Teen CLIMB participants where parents are given the tools to communicate with their children about their cancer diagnosis or their partner’s diagnosis. Parents are asked to come to the beginning of the CLIMB or Teen CLIMB program and then leave to attend their own support group.

Both CLIMB and Teen CLIMB are free of charge, but registration is required before attending the first meeting. Please contact any of the FVHO offices for registration information, dates, times and locations.
